Michigan State Contractor License Regulations

To apply for a contractors license in the State of Michigan you must first pass a business and law exam. There is an $80 non-refundable fee for both exams, and you must pass both with a minimum score of 70%. Every contractor is also required to pass the OSHA exam. Contractors are regulated at the state level, you must register with Builder's Unit Bureau of Commercial Services/Department of Consumer and Industry Services. The phone number is (517) 241-9254. Residential builders must participate in a construction lien recovery fund, with a limit of $75,000 per property. Please look closely at your local county  for information regarding liability insurance requirements. You should also contact the Michigan Workers' Compensation Agency to find out more on state requirements for workmans' comp insurance, you may also call them toll free at  1-888-396-5041.
